Varicose veins are caused by weak or damaged vein walls and valves. Normal valves would prevent back flow of the blood. Damaged valves will leak blood backwards. This causes the veins to be full of blood, increasing the blood pressure inside the vessel. This can happen because of previous pregnancy, chronic consipation, obesity or just being genetically predisposed.

    FAQ

    1. What is the cause of spider and varicose veins?

Spider veins are a small collection of thin red veins close to the surface of the skin, often found on the legs or face. Varicose veins are more enlarged and appear to be knotted and can cause more pain.  They are both caused by conditions known as venous reflux or venous insufficiency. This results in build ups of blood in the veins due to weak venous valves.

    2. Who is at risk for varicose and spider veins?

    • Genetics is the single largest signal for those at risk. Over 90% of those with spider veins have a family history of them.
    • Pregnancy can cause spider veins as well and half of all patients are female.
    • 50% of those over 50 years old are at risk since the vein’s valves grow weaker over time.
    • Obesity and the extra stress on the lower legs are a major cause.
    • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time causes venous problems from lack of blood flow.

    3. Are varicose veins and spider veins dangerous?

Overall, no, they are not dangerous. They will not, however, heal on their own and require active changes and treatment by a specialist. If untreated there is a risk for color changes of the skin around the veins, chronic swelling,  and rashes. This can cause discomfort for many people. Our office is the foremost vein specialist in Queens and we can provide treatment for all levels of severity.

    4. What happens when I visit a vein doctor?

Our experienced vein specialist will begin with an initial diagnosis and review of the personal and family health history. The areas which will need spider vein treatment will be identified, often photographed, and a risk-free ultrasound can be done to assist in identifying the areas and then treatment will be chosen based on severity.

    5. Are there different treatment options?

Yes! Depending on overall health and severity there are a few ways to treat varicose and spider veins. The simplest are support stockings which can be used in minor cases. As the size and pressure from the veins increase there are injection-based treatments, minor surgeries, and newer laser treatments that are less invasive. Stop by our Queens office to see which option is best for you!

    6. Can varicose and spider veins return even after treatment?

Although most patients achieve a high success rate, there is no ultimate cure for weak vein valves.  Typically the initial treatments will increase the overall vein health and prevent recurring discomfort, but with ultrasound treatments, we can monitor and treat ongoing issues in the future.

    7. What can I do to prevent varicose veins?

The best options for preventing spider and varicose veins are to maintain a healthy active lifestyle, and not go long periods of time without movement as this prevents proper blood circulation.  A healthy weight is also very important and by making these two changes you can reduce your risk for varicose and spider veins.
